Sending Gundam models into space! Japan's new move to promote the Tokyo Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee announced on the 15th that it will send a model of the anime "Mobile Suit Gundam" into space to send a message of support for the Olympics to the ground. As part of the Olympic promotion plan, the plan will be implemented in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the University of Tokyo.

According to a Japanese media report on May 15, the models sent into space this time are the "Gundam" and "Char's Zaku", which are about 10 centimeters high. The models will be loaded into the ultra-small satellite "G-SATELLITE" with a length of 30 centimeters and a width and height of 10 centimeters together with the electronic display board showing information, and will be launched on the supply ship of the International Space Station (ISS) in March next year.

After the satellite enters the geosynchronous orbit, the model and display board will be placed in space, and the camera on the satellite will follow and transmit the images to the earth at any time. The organizing committee will make it public through social networking sites (SNS), etc. The information content will include "Congratulations on winning the gold medal" and will be displayed in multiple languages such as Japanese and English.

At a press conference held in Tokyo, astronaut Nobushige Kanai, who returned from the ISS last June, took the stage. He revealed that he is also a fan of Gundam, and said, "In terms of being able to make everyone happy regardless of their country or background, space development and the Olympics are very similar."
