Ghostbusters, Dune, and other film franchises surpass $1 billion in revenue

The 40-year-old classic film series has surpassed the $1 billion mark after the latest film, "Ghostbusters: Ice Empire," took in $45.2 million in its U.S. opening weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo, Dune 2 grossed $17.6 million in the U.S. and $574 million worldwide, adding to the $433 million of the original Dune, which helped Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise pass the $1 billion mark.

Despite mixed reviews, Ghostbusters: Ice Age: Reborn performed better than expected in its opening weekend, surpassing its predecessor, Afterlife, which grossed $44 million. Based on early ticket sales from Deadline, exhibitors had expected the film to open around $30 million, but it actually surpassed that number.

"Godzilla vs. Kong: A New Empire" will be released in American theaters this weekend, and "Frozen" may face huge challenges in maintaining its box office.
