Recently, according to Taiwanese media reports, Pang Ho-cheung revealed during a promotional event for his new film in Taiwan that Zhou Xun has been confirmed to star in the new version of The Deer and the Cauldron, but her role is still undecided. On the same day, the official Weibo account of Pang Ho-cheung's studio reposted the news, with the caption "Don't ask who I am," seemingly confirming that Zhou Xun will indeed star in the film, but her role is still confidential. Previously, Pang Ho-cheung said, "It will be adapted from Mr. Jin Yong's legendary novel The Deer and the Cauldron. The next step is a new trilogy journey. I started adapting The Deer and the Cauldron a few years ago, from reshaping the characters to polishing the plot. The journey is finally about to begin, but Mr. Jin Yong is no longer here." It is expected that the "The Deer and the Cauldron" film trilogy will be shot back to back, with a tentative budget of 80 million US dollars (nearly 500 million RMB) for each film. Production will begin in mid-2019, and the first film is expected to be released in 2021. The Deer and the Cauldron has been adapted into TV dramas and movies many times before. Three of them were adapted into movies, the most famous of which was the 1992 version starring Stephen Chow (2 episodes). Seven of them were adapted into TV dramas, the most familiar of which were the 1998 version starring Jordan Chan and the 2000 version starring Dicky Cheung. The 1984 TVB version had the most luxurious cast, with Tony Leung playing Wei Xiaobao and Andy Lau playing the emperor. |
