Zhang Yimou lost the Oscars: Mainland China sent Jiang Wen's "Hidden Man" to compete for the Oscars

According to foreign media reports, the Oscar official website has announced the list of candidates for the Best Foreign Language Film, including the mainland's nominated films for the 91st Academy Awards. "Hidden Man" directed by Jiang Wen will be the first time that Jiang Wen's work represents China in the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film.

"Hidden Man" is the last of Jiang Wen's "Republic of China Trilogy", which is based on Zhang Beihai's original novel "Hidden Man". It tells the story of Li Tianran, a young knight in Beijing in 1936, who goes deep into the alleys of the ancient capital to find the culprit of the bloody murder of his master five years ago. As his investigation deepens, the battle of wits and ruthlessness among various people in Beijing surface, including Japanese spies, pro-Japanese elements, wealthy old families, gang bosses, socialites, foreign journalists, etc.

The film was released in mainland China on July 13, and has grossed 583 million yuan, with a score of 7.4 on Mtime.com. In addition, the film received six nominations at the 55th Golden Horse Awards, including Best Director and Best Supporting Actress (Xu Qing).

There were previous rumors online that Zhang Yimou's "Shadow" might compete for an Oscar.

Hong Kong has confirmed that it will send Operation Red Sea; Taiwan has confirmed that it will send The Great Buddha+.

In addition, all 87 films competing for the 91st Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film have been released, slightly less than last year's 92. These include "Doghouse Terror" selected by Italy, which was shortlisted for this year's Cannes Film Festival and won the Best Actor Award; "Shoplifters" selected by Japan, winner of the Cannes Palme d'Or; "Roma" from Mexico, winner of the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion Award; "Burning" from South Korea, winner of the highest score in the Cannes Historical Program; "Capernaum" from Lebanon, winner of the Cannes Jury Prize; and so on.
