Disney: New Star Wars movies may slow down

This year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story is a disgrace in Star Wars history. This spin-off story about Han Solo’s coming-of-age as a young man not only forced explanations for issues no one cared about, but also suffered a huge box office setback, becoming the lowest-grossing Star Wars film in history. Solo grossed $393 million worldwide, but the film reportedly cost $275 million (plus at least 50% of the advertising budget), which also means that Disney made the first movie in Star Wars history to lose money.

This is a historic event, so it was not long before reports emerged that Disney had halted the development of all Star Wars spin-offs, which could include films based on Obi-Wan and Boba Fett's perspectives. Disney denied these reports, but it's still clear that the failure of Solo has led Disney to reflect, and Disney CEO Bob Iger has taken the lead in this regard.

Bob Iger was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter and discussed this topic, introducing the current status of the Star Wars brand. One of the most criticized issues is that Star Wars movies have been released too frequently recently, with the original series and the spin-offs maintaining a pace of one movie per year. Iger said he needs to take the blame for this.

"I made the decision on the pace of releases. Looking back, I have to blame myself for everything. I made too many mistakes and too fast."

Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012, so they certainly wanted to see a return on their investment as soon as possible, but now it seems that haste makes waste. Now Iger has finally begun to reflect, saying, "The pace of new films may slow down, but this does not mean that we will stop making movies completely."

"JJ Abrams is busy filming Star Wars 9, and we have many creative talents, including Game of Thrones' David Benioff and DB Weiss, developing their own legendary stories. We are currently determining the arrangements after JJ Abrams' project, but I think we will be more cautious in deciding the scale and timing."

One Star Wars movie a year is fine, but the premise is to ensure quality and let the entire Star Wars brand grow and improve. But as long as Iger is sincere, perhaps his current decision is exactly what the Star Wars brand needs.
