Spider-Man: No Return screenwriter says Toby and Garfield agreed to star without reading the script

Spider-Man: No Homecoming is the third solo movie in the MCU Spider-Man series. According to the latest data, the movie has accumulated a global box office of $1.16128 billion. It has surpassed the $1.132 billion of Spider-Man: Far From Home, setting a record for Sony Pictures' highest global box office. For most fans, the appearance of three generations of Spider-Man is no longer a secret. In a recent interview, Chris McKenna, the screenwriter of Spider-Man: No Homecoming, said that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield agreed to sign a contract to return without even reading the script after receiving an invitation from Marvel, and were willing to play Spider-Man again.

Chris McKenna told The Hollywood Reporter that the team was ambitious about the film from the beginning. He and another screenwriter, Erik Sommers, proposed the exploration of the multiverse. They wrote a script that wanted to combine the three generations of Spider-Man. After discussing with the executives, they tried to persuade Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to try to play Spider-Man again.

The two screenwriters called the two former "Spider-Mans" on Christmas Eve 2020. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were relieved that Toby and Garfield both liked the conversation and were enthusiastic about further cooperation. It was not until December 2020 that Maguire and Garfield secretly signed the contract for the project, but neither of them had received the script at that time. Chris McKenna said they had a lot of ideas, and it was really interesting and helpful to see their ideas. No one can give more feelings and thoughts to the role of Spider-Man like the two of them, and they helped us shape the script.

Maguire, who played Spider-Man in three films between 2002 and 2007, wanted to keep things to a minimum when it comes to his character's exposure following the release of Spider-Man: No Homecoming. Garfield starred in two Amazing Spider-Man films between 2012 and 2014, with his Peter Parker beginning to explore a dark path after the death of his girlfriend Gwen Stacy in the second film. Garfield also sees his version as a bridge between Toby and Holland's versions, a good brother in the middle.

Chris McKenna also revealed that the ideas proposed by the two old "Spider-Man" were great, enhancing everything he wanted and adding layers to the story. They really started to polish this idea, and these two "Spider-Man" predecessors helped Holland's Peter Parker become who he ultimately wanted to be. At the climax of the movie, the two predecessors helped "Dutch Spider" through a critical, moral moment. A large part of this was Toby and Andrew's idea, they wanted their characters to bring something to the story.
