Netflix boss accuses Marvel of being stingy: unwilling to invest in "The Defenders" series

In a recent interview, Ted Sarandos, CEO of streaming platform Netflix, reviewed the company's Marvel collection and some of its struggles behind the scenes.

The platform previously filmed "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones", "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist". However, Marvel has since taken back all TV show productions, so the series are broadcast through the owner's platform Disney+.

When asked if he thought Disney+'s Marvel shows were successful, he told Variety: "I think they are. I don't really know, though, because they don't release any numbers."

He then went on to say, "With our show, we were dealing with the old Marvel TV regime, which operated independently of Disney. They were cheap. Every time we wanted to make a show bigger or better, we had to hammer them. Our motivations were misaligned. We wanted to make great TV; they wanted to make money. I thought we could make money by making great TV."

"You want to work with people who have the same motivations as you do. When we were producing, they were trying to make the show as cheap as possible. My goal was to make the show as good as possible. That's a lesson I'll always remember. As a producer, any money that Marvel didn't spend, they got to keep. So every time we wanted to add something to the show to make it better, there would be a fight."

Some of Netflix’s Marvel shows have also been gradually integrated into the Disney system. Charlie Cox, the star of Daredevil, has appeared in many Marvel shows because he is so suitable, and now he will get his own Disney+ series Daredevil: Resurgence. The Punisher actor Jon Bernthal, who is also very suitable, will also return in the show and may soon get his own independent series.
