Streaming platform Netflix has renewed its hit high-stakes reality show Squid!, based on the hit Korean drama, for a second season. The reality show started with 456 real contestants who would continue to participate in challenges similar to those in the original Korean drama, but they would not be immediately executed if they failed like in the Korean drama. The winner would eventually receive a prize of $4.56 million, which is the largest single prize in the history of reality shows. Brandon Riegg, Vice President of Nonfiction at Netflix, said: “Our decision to greenlight Squidward: The Reality Show Season 2 is our most ambitious unscripted show to ever premiere on Netflix. We are so excited to continue building this incredible Squidward competition series with our team in Korea and the producers at Studio Lambert and The Garden.” The reality show ranked first on Netflix's top ten English TV charts and ranked in the top ten in 93 countries. Since its release on September 17, 2021, the Korean drama "Squid Game" has received more than 1.65 billion streaming hours in just 28 days, becoming Netflix's number one series of all time, and a second season is also in production. |
