New stills of "Godzilla vs. Kong 2" show the two giant beasts joining forces to fight the enemy again

IGN exclusively revealed new stills from Godzilla vs. Kong 2.

"Godzilla vs. Kong" will be released in 2021 and directed by Adam Wingard. The sequel "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is scheduled to be released in 2024 and will still be directed by Adam Wingard.

In "Godzilla vs. Kong", Godzilla teamed up with King Kong to defeat MechaGodzilla. In this sequel to the Monster Universe, the director pointed out that from the title of the sequel (changed from vs to x), this one will emphasize the cooperation between Godzilla and King Kong to fight against a new enemy that threatens to destroy human civilization.

“As soon as the last movie came out and people started watching it, I was like, ‘You can’t keep these two guys separate,’ ” Wingard said. “It was so exciting to have them in one movie. Now, the next movie has to be a continuation of that relationship, that teamwork.”

"The skills that go into making a giant monster movie are so specific, and you have to learn them, and it's only at the end of the production that I'm like, 'Oh, wait, now I know this,'" Wingard explained in an interview with IGN. "I have all sorts of different ideas about how I'm going to do it next time, how I can improve it."

This time around, Wingard is very focused on doing right by the film's rich collection of monsters, each of which has a unique story to tell.

“A lot of the shots in the film are fully animated with CG, and a lot of it is pure imagination. We have some eight-minute-long sequences where just the monsters are doing their thing, so the film really lets the monsters tell their own stories in a visual, non-verbal way.”

One fan-favorite monster got the screen time it deserves in the sequel: Titanus Doug, the reptilian inhabitant of the Hollow Earth who made a one-shot appearance in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Speaking of the villain, director Wingard called it an "evil, King Kong-like character."

"We want to find an opponent that can rival both King Kong and Godzilla, which is really hard to do. This character has a lot of other characteristics, and it will be interesting to see what kind of threat he is."
