Overwhelmed Marvel Studios visual effects artists file for union election

During the ongoing strike by screenwriters and actors in Hollywood, many news stories have been exposed, including the poor and unsustainable working conditions of the animation production team of the previously acclaimed Marvel animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Universe". Marvel Studios was also previously exposed that the company's special effects artists were paid 20% less than their peers and had to work much more.

A majority of the 50-plus employees on Marvel Studios’ visual effects team have signed a union election petition to form a union, hoping to be represented by the international organization, the Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

According to Vulture, they are seeking to hold the election as early as August 21st.

“For nearly half a century, visual effects workers have been denied the same protections and benefits their colleagues and crew members have relied on since the dawn of the Hollywood film industry,” said Mark Patch, visual effects organizer for the IATSE union. “This is a historic first step for visual effects workers to come together and demand respect for the work we do.”
