Thirty-nine independent films and TV shows will be allowed to continue filming during the SAG-AFRA actors' strike. Variety reports that the list of approved films and shows includes two A24 projects: Mother Mary, directed by David Lowery and starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, and How the Unicorn Dies, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. A24 is not actually part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the body representing film studios that SAG-AFTRA is negotiating with. Other projects on the slate include Dust Bunny with Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver, The Rivals of Amziah King starring Matthew McConaughey, Bride Hard with Rebel Wilson, The Chose TV show, and Flight Risk starring Mark Wahlberg, directed by Mel Gibson. Variety added that some of the 39 projects have been completed but require waivers from the union to allow actors to participate in promotional activities. Under strike rules, actors cannot participate in promotional activities at all, including red carpets, interviews, and even social media activities. Filming of the second season of the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon is continuing because the cast is made up mainly of actors from the UK whose contracts are with the union Equity. Under British law, Equity members cannot strike in solidarity with US unions. This is the first time since 1960 that both actors and writers have gone on strike simultaneously; the WGA writers' strike continues with no signs of progress. It's unclear when or how the strike will be resolved, but for now Hollywood is at a virtual standstill. |
