Director Peter Sun talks about the inspiration of "Element City" coming from the idea of meeting something

Pixar's animated blockbuster "Elemental City" was released in China last month and will be released in Japan in August. Recently, the director talked about the inspiration for "Elemental City" at a promotional conference in Japan, which came from the crazy idea of "what if I could meet something."

"Elemental City" is an animated film produced by Pixar and directed by Peter Sun. It is voiced by Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie. It will be released in the United States and China on June 16, 2023.
The film tells the story of a girl from the Fire Tribe, Lu Xiaoyan, and a boy from the Water Tribe, Watabo, who live in the Elemental City. After they meet due to an accidental pipe rupture, they gradually get to know each other and fall in love with each other while searching for the leaking point of the pipe.

Director Peter Sun said that the new film with the elements as the theme is the most challenging production in Pixar's history. The problem is, if there really is an elemental world, what would the living conditions be like? How would the creatures living in it communicate with each other? These unknown topics are the source of inspiration for the film.

Although it is safer to produce a theme work that we have experience with, the inspiration of "Crazy Element City" lies in the unknown nature of "what if...", which is more in line with the human nature of exploring new things.
