'Super Mario Bros. Movie' becomes second highest-grossing animated film in the U.S.

Although the total box office has not officially exceeded $1 billion, the animated film adapted from the "Super Mario Bros." series of games has reached a new milestone. The latest report shows that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has become the second highest-grossing animated film of all time in North America.

The Hollywood Reporter states that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the fourth film to gross over $500 million in the United States, following Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.1 million), Skyfall 2 ($718.7 million), and Avatar: Watershed ($683.9 million). Additionally, it is the first Illumination and Universal Animation film to gross over $500 million domestically, not adjusted for inflation. The report further states that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time in the United States. And it is the third-highest-grossing Universal Pictures film of all time, behind only Jurassic World and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

"Super Mario Bros. Movie" is currently in theaters.
