As one of my favorite series, the third film of Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law has been rumored for a long time and now has new hope that it will be officially announced. The news comes from Susan Downey, Robert Downey Jr.'s wife and a Hollywood producer. "Well, here's what I can tell you. Amanda Burrell can attest to that. We had lunch with Robert and the other two before this. And we were talking about this," Susan said on the UnWarapped podcast. "So yes, it's still in the works. We'll get to it at the right time with the right team, but it's (still) a priority for the company and a priority for Robert." The first Sherlock Holmes film, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson, was released in 2009 and grossed over $524 million worldwide. The sequel, A Game of Shadows, pitted Holmes against Professor Moriarty, played by Jared Harris, and was released in 2011. It received mixed reviews (I loved it), but still grossed $543 million. While a third film was announced soon after, a decade had passed since then, and a lot had changed for Robert Downey Jr. as he was busy with Marvel movies and other projects. Both films were previously directed by Guy Ritchie, whose unique narrative editing style is one of the two highlights of the film. However, it is reported that he will no longer direct the third film, but will be directed by Dexter Fletcher, the director of Eddie the Eagle. Susan Downey added: "I do know, like sometimes I have more experience knowing when to settle down and follow the process. Like if we want something to be successful, we have to let some things happen before the final sprint, and maybe in the end it will fall into place naturally." |
