Avatar 2: The Way of Water producer confirms there will be no director's cut

Avatar 2: The Path of Water has only been in theaters for a week, and already many are wondering if James Cameron will release a director's cut of the film in the future. The answer so far is: don't expect too much.

Producer Jon Landau recently discussed the director's cut of the film in an interview with Polygon. Cameron has previously expressed some interesting ideas, including a six-hour streaming special version of the film, and simultaneously showing the theatrical version of the same film in a Variety show. Landau tried to explain these ideas and why it can't be compared to the Avatar sequels.

“I think James (Cameron) is taking advantage of other stories that have two different cuts — the idea is that you build a larger epic narrative that lasts six hours, and then you extract a two-hour movie from it,” Landau said. As for Waterway or even an extended cut of Avatar 3, Landau said: “We don’t have enough content to do that.”

At the same time, Avatar 2: The Way of Water is full of special effects. Therefore, making a longer version of the film is not as simple as reinserting the footage. Visual effects company Weta FX will have to process the footage to help them fit seamlessly into the film.

Additionally, Cameron previously mentioned that Avatar 2 was the "worst business case in the history of cinema," and that a more expensive, longer version of the film would seem to be causing it to "fail even more." So far, Avatar: The Way of Water has brought in around $500 million.
