"Ghost of Tsushima" will be made into a Japanese-language movie with all Japanese actors

The Ghost of Tsushima video game was heavily influenced by classic Japanese samurai movies, and the film's director Chad Stahleski wanted to continue this influence in the live-action film adaptation.

In an interview with Collider, the director cited classic samurai film director Akira Kurosawa as one of his "top five influences on me in terms of cinema," and he said that influence would carry over to this project in a big way if he were to make the film the way he wanted.

"Honestly, we tried to do it in a unique way. Meaning, it's a Japanese thing about the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. It's all Japanese actors, in Japanese. Sony was very supportive of us in that regard."

Stahleski added that he has been traveling to Japan since he was 16 and has a fondness for the country, the people and the language. The director also said that given the recent success of international streaming content like Squidward Idol, he thinks Western audiences will be willing to go to theaters to watch subtitles.

"I think American, or at least Western audiences in general are getting more used to it because we're getting more world content there because of Netflix and streaming and so on. Will they show up in theaters for it? I think yes, if everything else is there. Look, if I get all the other pieces right, I think I can give you enough inspiration to drive to the movies."
