Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, producers and directors of Better Call Saul and screenwriters, have announced that the Breaking Bad universe is coming to an end. The award-winning producers have confirmed that they will no longer be planning to create spin-offs after the final episode of Better Call Saul's sixth season airs on August 15. "We can't always put all our resources into one thing," Gilligan said at the Virtual TCA Show, according to Deadline. "I feel like we were stretching it a little bit with the Breaking Bad spinoff, but I was really happy with how it turned out. And then I did the C.E.C. movie, which I'm really proud of. But I think I'm starting to feel like it's time to bring the party to a close because you shouldn't get too hung up on it." Gilligan added that he has "no plans right now to do anything more in this universe," though he admitted, "I probably gave the same response when Breaking Bad ended." Gould agreed, adding that he'd like to try new things, but said "we can't say it's impossible because who knows what we'll be thinking in a few years." Breaking Bad aired for 5 seasons and 62 episodes, while Better Call Saul ended with 6 seasons and 63 episodes. A sequel to Breaking Bad, the film Eternal Love, was released in 2019 and tells the story of Aaron Paul's character Jesse Pinkman after the series finale. Gilligan has already lined up his next project, which Deadline reports is a "character-centric, human condition-exploring work in unexpected and surprising ways." The Twilight Zone has also been compared, and Gilligan wrote 31 episodes for the classic sci-fi series. |
