Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's story is more adult, and the audience has grown up

Director James Gunn hinted that the series finale, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will have a different tone than its predecessors as the third film will have a more "adult" story.

Gunn gave GameSpot an exclusive interview at SDCC 2022 and revealed some details. He explained how the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has evolved over time, leading to the third installment in the cosmic Marvel series. He warned fans that the team's final journey will be an emotional adventure.

"It's an amazingly emotional story. It's more adult in a way than the previous stories, you know when we started making these movies, they were 10, 11 when they saw the first one, and now they're 20, 21. This movie has grown with them."

The official synopsis for Episode 3 previews a high-stakes escape in which Peter, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, "rallies the team around him to protect not only their own but also the universe. This mission, if not successfully accomplished, could very well spell the end of the Guardians as we know them."

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" was completed in May this year and is currently in post-production. It belongs to the fifth phase of the MCU and is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2023.
