Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer recently talked about the movie "Borderlands", and bluntly stated that this movie, which was a huge hit upon its release, "stepped on a landmine" during the production process. The live-action movie adapted from the game grossed less than $9 million in its opening weekend, and only $33 million worldwide a month after its release. The film was reportedly produced with a budget of $120 million, and after reducing losses by selling the copyright, Lionsgate still lost as much as $30 million. And they are unlikely to shoot a Borderlands movie anytime soon. The CEO said at the company’s earnings conference recently: “Almost everything that could go wrong in the production of Borderlands went wrong: it was shelved for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it out of the safety zone of our usually strict financial model.” He admitted: “The success of our financial model does not always mean that we will also be successful creatively.” The boss of Take-Two, which acquired Borderlands developer Gearbox Software, also recently discussed the film, saying that despite its heavy box office losses, he believes it still helped boost sales of the game. |
