The CW says it will continue to produce superhero series

Deadline reported on CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz's superhero strategy during a press conference ahead of the network's upfront presentation this week. He confirmed this week that the network "is still going to be in the superhero business" despite the cancellations of Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and Naomi.

"For the CW DC Universe, we have Gotham Knights, so we're going to continue to be in the superhero business," Pedowitz said. "We're going to continue to support Greg Berlanti, who has creatively curated the CW DC Universe."

At the time of writing, The CW is currently moving forward with four DC series. The Flash Season 9 will return in 2022-23, Superman & Lois Season 3 will return, and Stargirl Season 3 will return. In May, the network will air the Gotham Knights pilot, as well as the non-superhero series Supernatural prequel and the new Supernatural star Walker. It's not that The CW is not interested in launching more superhero series, but it has to do with Warner Bros. and Viacom selling the network to Nexstar. As a result of this acquisition, The CW is restricted to a transitional state.

Pedowitz also briefly touched on The Flash, which is entering its ninth season, saying, "We haven't made any decisions about whether this might be the last season." Pedowitz added that he will be meeting with executive producers Berlanti and Eric Wallace in the near future to discuss the future of the series.
