Disney CEO confident: Even if we lose the Chinese market, our movies will still sell well

Many Disney movies, such as "Black Widow", "Eternals", "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" and "Doctor Strange 2", have not yet been released in mainland China. However, Disney Pictures is confident that even if they lose the Chinese market, their movies will still be a hit.

Recently, Disney Studios CEO Bob Chapek said at the second quarter earnings conference that although the current situation is somewhat complicated, he believes that Disney movies will achieve absolute success at the box office even without entering the Chinese market.

During the earnings conference, an analyst pointed out that many of Disney's recent films have failed to successfully enter the Chinese mainland market, which has put Disney Studios in a difficult position. They have failed several reviews. Chinese censorship agencies have very strict requirements on the content of films allowed to be released, and they limit the number of foreign films introduced.

Bob Chapek said that Disney will continue to submit applications, especially for "Doctor Strange 2", to try to get it released in mainland China. The film has not yet been released in mainland China, but its box office has achieved a good result of more than 500 million US dollars in less than a week, including 213.6 million in North America (released on May 6) and 294.2 million in 49 markets outside North America.

Bob Chapek said: "We are very confident that even if our films have difficulty being shown in mainland China, even if we lose the Chinese market, our films will still be successful."

In fact, not all Disney movies are rejected by the Chinese market. For example, "Encanto" in 2021 and "Murder on the Nile" in 2022 were both successfully released in mainland China.
