Venom: The Last Dance surpasses Joker 2 in North American box office in its opening weekend

Sony's Venom franchise is indeed an anomaly at the box office. The first two films received poor reviews, but the first film still earned more than $850 million in 2018, and the second film performed well at $500 million. Although Venom: The Last Dance had the worst opening weekend, it is expected to beat Joker 2 at the box office.

Despite ranking first in the domestic box office on its opening weekend, Venom 3 opened with only $51 million, slightly below the expected $65 million, and $30 million and $40 million lower than the openings of the first two films. Venom 2 opened with a box office of $90 million, setting a box office record at the time. Although the box office performance was not good, it still beat the $39 million opening of Joker 2.

The Last Dance also performed well outside the United States, earning an additional $124 million for a global total of $175 million. Joker 2 has also grossed just over $200 million worldwide to date.

Sony's Spider-Man movie Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Johnson-Taylor, is set to be released in December. It remains to be seen whether it can create a more successful franchise.
