Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a huge hit in North America, setting a record for the best start for a game-adapted movie

According to Variety, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" not only won the North American weekend box office championship ($71 million), but also set the best opening for a game-adapted movie in history.

The North American box office of "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" in its first weekend far exceeded the opening record of $58 million set by "Sonic the Hedgehog 1" in 2020 (the first three days of release). It should be pointed out that "Sonic the Hedgehog 1" was released in North America on President's Day weekend, and its box office of $70 million in four days of release was easily surpassed by its sequel "Sonic the Hedgehog 2".

Overseas, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned $37 million in 53 territories, bringing its international box office to $70 million and its global total to $141 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cost $90 million to make.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released alongside Sony's Doctor Morbius and Michael Bay's Ratchet, which ranked second with $10.2 million (down 74% from its first week), while Ratchet only had a disappointing $8.7 million, ranking fourth. After two weeks, Doctor Morbius has grossed $57 million in North America and $69.2 million internationally.

The third place was "The Lost City" starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, with a box office of 9.1 million US dollars.
