Paramount and Sega are collaborating on a Sonic the Hedgehog movie universe

Paramount has big plans for the Sonic the Hedgehog film series, with producer Tobby Ascher saying the idea is to create a "Sonic Cinematic Universe."

"We're creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to be adding new characters, like Tails and Knuckles; they're brand new to the movie, but they're beloved by gamers from all over the world," said Asher, who worked on the original 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

Earlier this year, Paramount and Sega announced a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie and a new live-action Sonic TV show coming in 2023. Nothing is known about the third movie, but Paramount and Sega confirmed that the Paramount+ TV show will focus on Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba.

2020's Sonic the Hedgehog is the highest-grossing video game movie in U.S. history. The sequel will be released in Europe and the United States on April 8, with all the original cast members returning, including Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Eggman.

Meanwhile, the next Sonic the Hedgehog game is this year's Sonic Frontier, which is scheduled to be released on PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch, but the release date has not yet been announced.
