Sony internal email celebrates Uncharted's box office success: a victory for all departments

According to an exclusive report by foreign media Deadline: Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman recently celebrated the performance of the newly released "Uncharted" in an internal email to employees, saying that the film has good box office and audience response, and has become "a new popular movie series for our company (meaning there is hope for a sequel?)" and "a victory for all departments of the company."

Uncharted was released in North America on February 18, with a global box office of $106.4 million in its first weekend, and a global box office of $139 million so far. The North American box office for the first week (due to the President's Day holiday, the North American first week included this Monday, a total of four days) was $51 million, far exceeding the previous industry expectation of $30 million. The film cost $120 million to make. Rothman also cited the film's Rotten Tomatoes audience approval rating (90%) in his email.

Uncharted follows the traditional cinema-first and 45-day window. The email also mentioned that the film is another proof that the cinema model is feasible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike many other large companies that prioritize or simultaneously release their big productions on streaming media, Sony's many superhero and action blockbusters have maintained traditional cinema releases.

The Uncharted movie will be released in the country on March 14.
