"Joker 2" box office plummeted in the second weekend, creating the biggest drop in the history of comic book movies

"Joker 2" hit American theaters on October 4, with a box office of 37 million US dollars in its first weekend, which is only one-third of the previous "Joker" (96 million US dollars). Now in its second weekend of screening, the box office of "Joker 2" has plummeted from 37 million US dollars to 7 million US dollars, a drop of 81%, creating the largest drop in the history of comic book adaptations. This record was previously held by Marvel's "Captain Marvel 2" (78%).

On CinemaScore, Joker 2 received a "D" rating, the lowest among all comic book adaptations, and its second weekend box office decline exceeded that of 2022's Morbius (74%), 2023's The Flash (72%), 2019's X-Men: Dark Phoenix (71%), 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army (70%), 2010's Jonah Hex (69%), 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum of Madness (69%), 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (69%), and 2023's Shazam! Wrath of the Gods (69%).

So far, Joker 2 has grossed $165 million worldwide, with a domestic total of about $57 million, while the previous Joker earned $39.3 million on its first Friday in 2019 alone, soaring to $335 million in the U.S. and $1.06 billion worldwide, becoming the first R-rated movie to break the $1 billion milestone and the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time until Marvel's Deadpool vs. Wolverine broke that record.
