The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2019 that Joker 2 was in development, saying that director Todd Phillips immediately approached Toby Emmerich, head of Warner's film department, after the film set the North American October opening box office record, and proposed developing the origin story of DC characters, and is expected to continue to serve as director in the sequel.

But Todd Phillips and Warner Bros. denied or didn't acknowledge the claim at the time, stressing that there was no serious discussion about the sequel.
