Matt Damon's daughter complains about Zhang Yimou's "The Great Wall": There is only a wall but no greatness

Matt Damon recently said on Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast that he had a bad feeling when filming "The Great Wall". He believed that Zhang Yimou was under pressure from Hollywood investors and sacrificed his vision for the film, so that the script was not coherent and harmonious, and it would not work as a movie. "At that time I thought: This is how disasters happen."

Talking about his 15-year-old daughter Isabella watching his movies, she would complain if she thought they were bad. One of them was Zhang Yimou's 2016 fantasy action film "The Great Wall". Damon said his daughter called the movie "The Wall", omitting the "Great" in the title. When Damon corrected her, Isabella would reply: "Dad, there is nothing 'great' about this movie."

Damon also said that at the time he had to think about what he should do as a professional actor. He knew he was facing failure, but he still had to persevere: "Okay, there are still 4 months, just like the siege in the morning light on Hamburger Heights, I will definitely die here, but I will still do it. Creatively speaking, this is the worst situation you will face, and I hope to never experience that feeling again."

He said that when he first read the script, he thought that this movie would be like "Lawrence of Arabia", "Dances with Wolves" and "Avatar", telling the story of outsiders entering a new culture, finding value in this culture, and bringing some foreign skills to help them face any challenges, and both sides undergo permanent changes as a result.
