Universal spent $400 million to buy the copyright of "The Exorcist" and plans to launch a new trilogy in the series

According to Variety, a well-known film and television media, Universal Pictures recently reached a copyright deal with Morgan Creek that is said to be worth more than US$400 million. The transaction is for the global copyright of the classic horror movie IP "The Exorcist".

Universal Pictures plans to produce a new "Exorcist" trilogy. This time , actor Ellen Burstyn from the 1973 film was invited to play the original role of Chris MacNeil, and David Gordon Green was appointed as the film director.

According to Universal Pictures, the three new "Exorcist" movies shot this time are not remakes of the original 1973 movie, but sequels to the film. It is reported that the first part of the new trilogy will be officially released in theaters on October 13, 2023, and according to the New York Times, the subsequent parts may premiere on Peacock, a streaming platform under Universal Pictures.
