South Korean film director Bong Joon-ho shared some details about his upcoming HBO TV series Parasite at the Cannes Film Festival, IndieWire reports. The director explained that he never expected Parasite, which has won multiple Oscars and a Palme d'Or, to become as popular as it has, and said his goal was to make the show "some kind of great genius" to earn those accolades. Bong Joon-ho said: "Parasite is a film about rich and poor families, which is a ubiquitous issue. This theme continues to resonate in France and elsewhere... Many of us want to be rich, but I think all of us have a fear of becoming poor." Prior to the show's release, all we knew was that it existed and that Bong was working with writer-director Adam McKay. Even with McKay's involvement, we couldn't make sense of another detail Bong shared - that the show would be a dark comedy. The duo spent much of 2020 collaborating on the show, and yet no details have yet been revealed about the show, such as casting or a production start date. Bong also shared some details about the finished script he mentioned earlier this year, based on Claire Nouvian's 2007 book The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss. He said it was a "French science book that my wife bought back home" and that his "imagination" used the book as a starting point for an animated film. Of course, animated films take time to make, and he conservatively estimated a release date of 2025 or 2026. |
