■ Review

Sherlock Hound: The Blue Carbuncle and The Treasure of the Deep Sea are animated films directed by Miyazaki Hayao that were released in 1984 and are highly praised for their unique worldview and detailed storytelling. While the films are based on the original Sherlock Hound series by Arthur Conan Doyle, the story is an original one for the anime. Filled with the magic of Miyazaki Hayao, these films are still loved by many fans today as entertainment that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

"The Blue Carbuncle" depicts an adventure involving a mysterious bird that appears in the sky above London and a blue carbuncle that is stolen from a jewelry store. The villain Moroachis appears, and Holmes and Watson are at the mercy of his schemes, as well as the presence of a young girl named Polly, adding depth to the story. Hayao Miyazaki's drawings of London's streets and the design of the mysterious bird are very impressive and visually appealing. Furthermore, through the character of Polly, the suffering and hopes of people living at the bottom of society are depicted, making this a human drama that goes beyond a simple detective story.

Meanwhile, "The Treasure of the Deep Sea" depicts an adventure in search of Napoleon's treasure. A highlight of the story is the exploits of Holmes and Watson as they pursue the Moroach, who has stolen a submarine. In this episode, the chase scene on a warship and the depiction of the ocean floor are extremely realistic, making for a strong visual impact. The character of the adventurer Colonel Lysander is also fascinating, and his adventurous spirit and courage add excitement to the story. Miyazaki Hayao's undersea world is beautiful and mysterious, and has the power to draw the audience in.

The appeal of this work lies above all in Hayao Miyazaki's unique worldview and meticulous storytelling. Furthermore, the ending theme "Adventure's Alibi" sung by Haruko Kuwana is also an important element in livening up the atmosphere of the work.

Hayao Miyazaki's works are known for always including social messages, and this one is no exception. "The Blue Ruby" depicts the suffering and hopes of people living at the bottom of society, while "The Treasure of the Deep Sea" portrays the importance of adventure and courage. These messages resonate with people of all ages, from children to adults, and add depth to the work.

The production staff for this film is also extremely impressive. Screenwriter Sunao Katabuchi would later go on to work on masterpieces such as "Mai Mai Shinko and the Thousand Year Magic" and "In This Corner of the World." Animation directors Yoshifumi Kondo, Tsukasa Tannai, and Kazuhide Tomonaga are also known as important staff members in Hayao Miyazaki's films. Art director Nizo Yamamoto, cinematographer Hirotaka Takahashi, and sound director Shigeji Shiba also play important roles in supporting the quality of Hayao Miyazaki's films. Music by Kunio Muramatsu is also an important element in enhancing the atmosphere of Hayao Miyazaki's films.

Although this is one of Miyazaki Hayao's early works, it contains many elements that are common to his later works.
