story

In order to save the fairy world, the four fairies, Mirumo, Rirumo, Yashichi, and Murmo, break a precious musical instrument. They visit the Gaia tribe, the gods of the fairy world, to repair the instrument, where they are introduced to Topuru, an instrument craftsman, who revives the instrument. The newly revived instrument can emit more powerful magic than ever before, and also has a special power called "session magic." This magic is activated by the love for one's partner (a human), and various combinations, such as Mirumo's maracas and Rirumo's tambourine, Rirumo's tambourine and Yashichi's triangle, or Yashichi's triangle and Murmo's snare drum, can produce combined magic with different effects.

However, there was a big reason behind why the Gaia tribe gave this special instrument to Mirumo and his friends. Long ago, the Gaia tribe sealed the evil power "Daaku" that threatened the fairy world in "Hailuna Forest". As time passed, the power of Daaku grew stronger, and he broke the seal of the Gaia tribe and moved to the human world. Daaku did not fully regain his physical form, and was maintained in his form by the negative power of the human world. Furthermore, he was trying to increase the number of "cracks" by using the negative power of the human world, and ultimately destroy the fairy world. Since the Gaia tribe could not lay hands on the human world, they decided to give the powerful instrument to Mirumo and his friends in order to thwart Daaku's plan.

Daaku uses Saori Eguchi, an influential flute player with worldwide influence, to try to make many people generate negative power. At first, Saori's flute music generates negative power as Daaku intended, but as her friendship with Kaede and the others deepens, his plan falls apart. Daaku realizes that there is a power in the human world that can counter the power of evil, and targets Mirumo, Kaede, and the others for attack. Will Mirumo and the others be able to protect both the human and fairy worlds?
