The main character, Rantaro, is a 10-year-old boy with shaggy hair and glasses. He is fast on his feet, good at drawing, and has an honest and lively personality. Kirimaru lost his family in the war, but is a tough boy who works part-time and loves small change. Shinbei is the son of a wealthy merchant in Sakai, and has a gentle personality but a big appetite. The story is centered around these three characters, and is filled with a variety of unique personalities.

Hansuke Doi, a teacher of the first-year class, is knowledgeable about gunpowder and military tactics, but also has a humorous side to him, as he has a weakness for kamaboko and chikuwa. Denzo Yamada is a practical teacher who is skilled in a wide range of ninjutsu techniques, from matchlock guns to disguises, and has a deep love for his students. Yuki, Tomomi, Shige, and the mysterious teacher Shina Yamamoto from the Kunoichi classroom also add color to the story.
