Members suggested: appropriately resume inserting advertisements in TV dramas

As the 2021 National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference are underway, members of the National Committee are actively offering their opinions and suggestions. Among them, a member brought a proposal on appropriately restoring advertisements in TV dramas.

Faced with the situation that provincial satellite TV theaters are losing money and it is difficult to continue normal operations, which in turn affects the budget for purchasing dramas and the production of high-quality products, member Lv Huanbin put forward three specific suggestions:

First, it is recommended to open one advertisement slot per episode, which should be controlled within 1 to 1.5 minutes;

Second, we should appropriately open up soft advertising products of a packaging nature in TV dramas;

The third is to strictly control according to the standards of content review.

This takes into account the two major challenges of satellite TV theater operation and drama advertising management.

The ban on inserting advertisements into TV dramas dates back to 10 years ago. On November 28, 2011, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television issued the "Supplementary Provisions to the Measures for the Administration of Broadcasting and Television Advertisements", which decided that from January 1, 2012, TV stations across the country would no longer be allowed to insert advertisements in any form during each episode of TV dramas.

The spokesperson of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television pointed out that TV dramas are one of the spiritual and cultural products that have penetrated into thousands of households and are deeply loved by the people. Canceling the advertisements in the middle of each episode of TV dramas broadcast by TV stations can effectively achieve the integrity of the plot of each episode of TV dramas and the continuity of audience ratings, which is in line with the interests and wishes of the general public and better reflects the public welfare cultural service function of radio and television.

In 2015, it was revealed that the Television Association wrote to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, proposing "several suggestions on strengthening the work of the TV drama market." One of the suggestions was particularly eye-catching, that is, "restoring advertising inserts in TV dramas."

At that time, some drama critics pointed out that the rapid growth of Internet media had a severe impact on television media, and second- and third-tier satellite TV stations and terrestrial channels generally encountered operational difficulties and insufficient funds for purchasing films.
