Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie is not based on the game

Disney announced a series of movie and TV show release information at its 2020 Investor Day event on Thursday. One of the pieces of information has attracted the close attention of video game players, that is, the new Star Wars-themed movie "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron", which is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day 2023. "Rogue Squadron" is one of the most famous Star Wars games, but unfortunately, this movie has nothing to do with the game.

Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman 1984, will direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. She clarified the doubts about the game adaptation in a recent interview with IGN. Jenkins said that the movie she shot presents an original story. However, she said that the film will be "heavily influenced" by the Rogue Squadron game and novel. Players of Rogue Squadron can then see if this statement is true.

Rogue Squadron did not originate from the movies, but from the comic book series created by Michael Stackpole. Stackpole was inspired by the Star Wars movies, especially Episodes 4 and 5, to create X-Wing: Rogue Squadron. Later, in 1998, the game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was released. By then, Stackpole had created 35 episodes of Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron comics, plus six related novels.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron took the title to a whole new level. After its official release in December 1998, it became the second best-selling game of the Christmas season. This arcade-style flight shooting game lets players take on the role of a member of the Rebel Alliance's best X-wing fighter squadron, Rogue Squadron. The game's plot begins before The Empire Strikes Back and ends with the ending of Return of the Jedi.

The Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie will be released during the Christmas season of 2023.
