HBO wins the adaptation rights to the masterpiece "Parasite" and Bong Joon-ho will personally direct the short drama

HBO suddenly announced a major news today that they have obtained the rights to adapt Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's 2019 masterpiece "Parasite".

According to DeadLine, old rival Netflix also participated in the competition for the adaptation rights. Netflix had previously collaborated with Bong Joon-ho on the 2017 "Okja", but unfortunately HBO took the lead this time.

"Parasite" is a dark satire about the relationship between two families. It has grossed $130 million worldwide, and won many major awards including the Palme d'Or at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival and the Best Foreign Language Film at the 77th Golden Globe Awards. It is also a strong contender for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and is hailed as the pinnacle of Korean films in recent years.

"Once you get over the one-inch-high barrier of subtitles, you'll see more wonderful movies," Bong said at Sunday's Golden Globes. "I think we all speak the same language around the world - the art of film."

Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Adam McKay will also be participating in HBO's "Parasite" adaptation short series with Bong Joon-ho himself.
