Don’t like watching movies anymore? China’s box office fell by 1.6 billion in 2019

According to the latest statistics, the box office revenue of the Chinese mainland film market from January to May 2019 was 24.941 billion yuan, a 6.35% decrease from the 26.5 billion yuan in the same period last year, excluding service fees. Including service fees, the box office revenue in the first five months of this year was 27 billion yuan, which is still a significant decline compared to last year's 28.453 billion yuan.

The Wandering Earth

This year, the growth rates of both the box office revenue and the number of moviegoers were negative, which was the first negative growth in the Chinese film market since 2011. Li, the manager of Beijing Cinema Line, analyzed the matter: "On the one hand, the performance in 2018 was too good, which led to greater pressure on the box office growth this year. On the other hand, the appeal of this year's movies was not as strong as last year, and the reduction in ticket subsidies and other multiple reasons led to the downward trend."

In 2018, the total box office in mainland China was 60.6 billion yuan (including service fees), and 56.5 billion yuan after excluding service fees. As of June 15 this year, the total box office in mainland China was 29 billion yuan (including service fees), and 26.9 billion yuan after excluding service fees. 2019 is almost halfway through, and whether it can surpass last year's total performance has become a suspense.
