Is Marvel's strongest superhero still human? Captain Marvel's origin story

With the recent release of the first trailer for Captain Marvel, we finally know what this Marvel movie, which will be released next year, will be about. But while answering many questions, this trailer also raises more questions in the minds of fans, and viewers who are not familiar with Carol Danvers in the comics may be even more confused. For example, is Captain Marvel a human?

With that in mind, we thought now would be the perfect time to introduce fans to the traditional Captain Marvel from the comics. Below we'll tell you about the origins of Marvel's most powerful superhero, her super powers, and how the movie adapts the comics.

Is Captain Marvel a human or an alien?

In short, she is indeed a human who grew up on Earth. In the trailer, she obviously lost her memory, but she can still feel that she has lived on this planet. Carol was born in an ordinary family and has no superpowers. In the comics, she briefly merged with the body of Mar-Vell, the first captain of the Kree tribe, in an accident.

Thanks to this accident, Carol's human DNA was fused with the Kree genes, giving her powerful powers. So while she is still human at heart, part of her genes have become alien. This is the source of her superpowers, and it may also explain why Ronan, the notorious Kree racist, was willing to tolerate such a lowly human serving in his Starfleet.

Captain Marvel's super powers

In addition to being an ace pilot and experienced soldier, Carol's superpowers make her one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Universe. She has almost the same level of strength and combat power as the Hulk.

Carol also has the ability to absorb cosmic energy and other forms of energy and release it in the form of photon blasts. In rare cases, she will transform into a more powerful Binary form, which explodes with tremendous energy. There are also such scenes in the trailer, suggesting that Carol will undergo a similar transformation in the movie.

Carol's Background

In the comics, Carol Danvers is portrayed as an ambitious young woman who left her problematic family and joined the U.S. Air Force. Her motto is "Higher, Further, Faster, More", which shows her desire to fly higher and gain a broader perspective. While serving in the Air Force, she met the Kree warrior Mar-Vell, who was disguised as a human. In an accidental explosion, Carol's DNA merged with Mar-Vell's DNA, and she became the superhero Ms. Marvel. A few years later, Mar-Vell died of cancer, and Carol inherited his mantle and became the new Captain Marvel.

The film obviously makes a big change from the comics, where Carol becomes an Avenger instead of joining the Kree army and adventuring in space. However, the trailer makes it clear that her origin story remains the same - she had a troubled childhood, joined the Air Force, and finally became a superhero.

Carol's Amnesia

Another big change in the movie is that Carol seems to have lost her memory of her life on Earth. The accident that gave her superpowers also wiped her memory, forcing her to make the Kree her home. It was not until Carol returned to Earth (as a "deserter" in Nick Fury's words) that she could recall her life on Earth in fragments.

While this is a new plot in Captain Marvel's story, it's not hard to see why Marvel Studios would add this element to Carol's new story. Her upbringing was more difficult than most Marvel heroes: she had an abusive father, and she also had lofty ideals, a strong desire to escape her surroundings and pursue her dreams in the sky. Her amnesia is likely both a result of her physical trauma and a way for her to escape from the past that she can't bear to look back on.

While Carol doesn't suffer from amnesia in the comics, she does experience split personality. She often changes from Carol Danvers to Ms. Marvel, and then loses all of Ms. Marvel's memories when she reverts back to Carol. This movie may draw inspiration from this situation.

It's also worth noting that Carol in the comics isn't completely free of amnesia. In 1981's Avengers Annual #10, her image was completely changed. Her superpowers and memories were stolen by Rakshasa (Rakshasa joined the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, not the X-Men at the time). It was a fresh start for Carol, who temporarily joined the X-Men and transformed into Binary form for the first time in a storyline called The Brood Saga. The movie may also borrow some inspiration from these classic stories, although we doubt Rakshasa will appear in this movie.
