Speaking to the British Film Institute on Thursday, Oppenheimer director Nolan said making a true horror film is something he'd eventually like to try - and he broke down what it is about the genre that appeals to him. "I think horror movies are really interesting because they rely on very cinematic techniques. Horror movies are really about eliciting a visceral reaction to things. So, at some point, I really wanted to make a horror movie. But I think a really good horror movie requires a really great idea—and there are so few of them. So I haven’t found the right genre for this story yet. But I think it’s a really interesting genre from a cinematic perspective. It’s also one of the few genres that studios make a lot of movies in that genre that have a lot of bleak and abstract elements. They have a lot of qualities that Hollywood is usually very resistant to putting in movies, but the horror genre allows for that.” |
