A survey by the Japan Anime Association shows that the profits of the animation industry outside Japan have exceeded 20%

According to a recent annual report by the Japan Animation Association, profits from the animation industry outside of Japan have exceeded 20%.

The report, which covers the period up to 2022, states that overseas markets account for about 20% of total Japanese anime profits in 2022, an increase of 11% from the previous year. This may be attributed to the popularity of works such as "Spy Play", "Attack on Titan" and "Cyberpunk: Edgewalker" in cooperation with CDPR on streaming platforms.

The 2023 Anime Industry Report, which covers anime profits from a variety of sources, including domestic television, streaming, merchandise and music sales in Japan, shows that the global market will be worth about 1.5 trillion yen (about $10.5 billion) in 2022.

The public bar chart shows the profit ratios of different sectors of the animation industry market. The pink part represents overseas sales, which shows an 11% increase in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Since 2014, the anime market outside of Japan has grown every year, and the revenue of anime films has also increased, as can be seen from 2022's "One Piece: Red-Haired Diva" (global box office of approximately US$37.47 million) and 2023's "Slam Dunk" movie "THE FIRST SLAM DUNK" (global box office of US$279 million).

In addition, in order to adapt to this trend, Japanese animation companies have also paid more attention to global operations. For example, Toho's "Jujutsu Kaisen" and other works have gained considerable popularity overseas and increased overseas profits by 85.8% from March to August 2023.

It is worth mentioning that in 2020, the profits of overseas markets once exceeded those of the Japanese market. This may be due to the growth rate of streaming media during the epidemic. Now the profits of these two major markets are almost converging.
