Disney reflects on the decline in movie reputation and box office: Values should not be conveyed first

Disney, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, has had a series of box office duds this year. From "Indiana Jones 5", "Captain Marvel 2" to "Wishing a Star", the reputation and box office are very poor. This is the first time since 2014 (except for the epidemic years of 2020 and 2021) that no movie has exceeded $1 billion worldwide.

CEO Bob Iger reflected on this: creators should put entertainment first, not conveying values first. He also said that Disney will be more cautious about filming sequels.

Bob Iger reflected in an interview with CNBC that Disney's creators had forgotten what their job should be, which is to entertain first, rather than convey values first.

He added that while it might be great to ‘send positive values to the world,’ that shouldn’t be the creator’s primary job. Going forward, we’ll only greenlight a sequel if we believe the story the creator wants to tell is worth telling.”

Regarding the poor market and word-of-mouth performance of Captain Marvel 2, Bob Iger attributed it to the fact that Marvel has too many film and television products, making it difficult for executives to supervise. "Captain Marvel 2 was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when too many works were being created at the same time, and there was not enough supervision (from executives) on the set."

In an interview with The Times, Bob Iger expressed his disappointment with the work of former CEO Bob Chapek: "I was disappointed with what I saw during the transition and during my departure, and I tried hard to improve it."

Bob Iger said Disney's current CEO succession plan is robust, adding that he will definitely step down as CEO when his recently extended contract expires at the end of 2026.
