John Wick 3 Producer Explains Why Winston Shot John Wick in the Ending

"John Wick 3" (also known as John Wick: Chapter 3), which was released in May 2019, is an action film directed by Chad Stahelski, written by Derek Kolstad and Shay Hatton, and starring Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry and Ian McShane.

In the ending, Ian McShane, who played the Continental Hotel manager Winston Scott, unexpectedly shot and killed the protagonist John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, making the protagonist's life and death an unsolved mystery before the release of "John Wick 4".

Recently, Basil Iwanyk, one of the producers of "John Wick 3", revealed the reason for arranging this plot in an interview with foreign media "The Direct". He said: "For Winston, there is never really only one reason for him to take action. In other words, he will take action, and he will leave enough opportunities to repackage the action. So I really believe that when he shot him, it was not an escape. I think part of him said, 'Okay, this will make me perform well at the High Table meeting, I will be fine, and we will live happily ever after.' Then I think another part of him said, 'Okay, I'm going to do this in a way that keeps John alive, because I may need him in the future.'"

Basil Iwanyk added: "And because if he really wanted to kill John Wick... you don't shoot a guy and he falls and he falls. You shoot him five times... so I think, yes, he did shoot him. I think if he died, Winston would be prepared for it, but I don't think he would be sad that he was still alive. He's playing tricks, Winston is always planning."
