Netflix will introduce its new password-sharing policy to multiple additional markets, including the United States, by the second quarter of this year. The platform previously launched the new policy in test markets of Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru on February 5 this year. It then expanded its new password-sharing policy to Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal later that month. The company said that in each of these countries, there was an immediate "cancellation reaction" where users decided to stop continuing their subscriptions. But this was eventually replaced by former sharers creating new accounts or paying more to officially add new users to existing accounts. The company had shared the policy on its US FAQ page before removing it and attributing it to a mistake. The since-deleted policy FAQ page stated that all devices using a single account must be associated with a single primary location, which the company will verify by mandatory logins to the same Wi-Fi connection every 31 days. Netflix will prompt secondary users from other locations to sign up for their own account or a second account. Subscribers on long-term trips will be able to request temporary codes for hotel smart TVs, company laptops, and more mobile devices for seven consecutive days. Subscribers will be able to add up to two secondary users who live outside of the account's primary location for an additional fee. The company is also offering a profile transfer feature under the new policy, which will enable users to transfer their queue lists and viewing history to another account. Netflix announced that the service added 1.75 million new subscribers in the first quarter of 2023, bringing Netflix's total number of global subscribers to 232.5 million, making it the company with the largest number of subscribers to a single streaming service in the world. Finally, Netflix announced that it would terminate its DVD rental service on September 29, 2018, after 25 years. The company started online DVD purchase and rental services in 1997, but closed the sales service a year later. Since then, Netflix has been mainly known for its disc rental service and the red packaging of its rental discs. However, as the streaming service launched in 2007 has become more and more popular, DVD rental activities have gradually been forgotten. |
