The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially hit theaters, and reviews are polarizing. While the return of Mario to the big screen may be a box office success, not all critics like the movie. The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 55%. The Verge called it "a new benchmark for video game adaptations", while Polygon believed that the film was "endless nostalgia temptation without its own highlights". This may also be the characteristic of Illumination Studios, which produced "Minions": too many jokes, well-made, but perhaps a little empty. IGN's evaluation of the film is: "Super Mario Bros. Movie" is a fireball full of animated fantasy. The adventures of Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach are intoxicating with their infectious energy and clever tributes to video games. The Mushroom Kingdom is presented with top-notch animation effects, making it a wonderland like the Wizard of Oz, which makes people look forward to the inevitable sequel. The voice lineup gives each character a unique interpretation, but the emotional arc is not fully presented and does not receive the same attention as the aesthetics, which is not good enough. And the plot is a bit by the map, and Mario and Luigi are separated for half of the movie. Illumination and Nintendo are committed to presenting a Mario movie that anyone can enjoy and that people who have a certain understanding of the game can indulge in, and they have succeeded in both directions. |
