According to Variety's anonymous sources, HBO is in the early stages of developing a new Game of Thrones prequel series that will tell the story of King Aegon I's conquest of Westeros. The series follows Aegon Targaryen and his sister wives Visenya and Rhaenys as they use dragons and armies to conquer all six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros except Dorne. Aegon I will become the first King of Westeros, sitting on the Iron Throne and establishing the Targaryen dynasty. The events take place approximately 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones. While no writers have yet been attached to the project, sources say HBO is eager to move forward and has begun looking for writers. Additionally, the project may have a movie as a series component, but plans are still being finalized. The project would be the latest in a string of Westeros-based projects for HBO following the success of Game of Thrones. The only other project to have made progress is House of the Dragon, which premiered in August 2022 and has been renewed for Season 2. Another Game of Thrones prequel was a test episode for The Long Night starring Naomi Watts, which was ultimately scrapped in 2019. A report in late March indicated that HBO's plans for the second season of House of the Dragon were shorter than the 10 episodes of Season 1. This would allegedly fit in with the overall vision for the series, and that the show's creative team was already planning a third season. |
