Dwayne Johnson to star in Moana live-action film

Disney and Dwayne Johnson announced that a live-action version of Moana is in development. The live-action film will showcase Pacific islands, communities and traditional cultures, and tell the story of a young woman on a journey of self-discovery.

Johnson appeared at Disney's annual shareholder meeting to announce the project. Although there are few details about the film, Johnson said that the characters Moana, Gramma Tala, Te Fiti, Heihei and Maui from "Moana" will all appear. Johnson voiced Maui in the animated film "Moana", and he will continue to play Maui in the live-action film.

The live-action film is produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn. Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original 2016 animated film "Moana", will serve as an executive producer of the live-action version. The director has not yet been announced.

Moana is the latest in Disney's growing roster of live-action remakes, which have already seen Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan and the upcoming The Little Mermaid.
