Amazon Prime Video and BBC are producing a new season of the action-suspense series "The Night Manager", and Tom Hiddleston, who played the classic Marvel villain "Loki" in the last season, has also confirmed that he will return as the protagonist Jonathan Pine. According to Deadline, the first season of the miniseries was first broadcast on AMC in 2016, and Amazon and the BBC have renewed the series for two more seasons. Filming for the second season will begin later this year, and screenwriter David Farr will also write the second season. The six-episode first season miniseries is based on the 1993 novel of the same name by John le Carre. In the story, Tom Hiddleston plays a former British soldier who works as a night manager at a luxury hotel in Cairo and is recruited by the manager of the Foreign Office task force to investigate illegal arms sales and try to get into the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Roper (played by Hugh Laurie in "House MD"). The original author John le Carre also made a cameo appearance as a patron of the restaurant in the fourth episode. Allegedly, in season 2, the main characters are told that Roper is dead nearly two years after he was captured by Syrian officials, and are given a new, more deadly challenge, most likely because Hugh Laurie is unable to return to play the villain. The series won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing and Contact Music Composition, and three Golden Globe Awards: Best Supporting Actor for Hugh Laurie, Best Supporting Actress for Olivia Colman, who played the caretaker, and Best Actor for Tom Hiddleston. |
