Tim Burton: No more Disney movies after 'Dumbo' remake

After a long and turbulent career at Walt Disney Studios, famed director Tim Burton says he may not make another Disney movie.

In an interview with DEADLINE, Tim Burton said: "My history is grassroots. I have been hired and fired many times throughout my career."

"As for 'Dumbo,' it was the reason I thought my time at Disney was over. I realised I was Dumbo and I was working in this big scary circus and I needed to get away, and the film is partly autobiographical."

The live-action remake of Dumbo, based on Walt Disney's 1941 animated film, was released in 2019, starring Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green, Alan Arkin and Danny DeVito. It was a commercial success, grossing over $353 million worldwide on a $70 million budget.

According to DEADLINE , Burton said that Disney is now primarily focused on the Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars franchises, and commented that despite his foray into the superhero world with 1989's Batman, he has no interest in making a Marvel movie.

“It’s become very homogenous, very integrated. There’s less and less room for different types of things,” he said, referring to individual projects that go unnoticed. “I can only handle one universe. I can’t handle the multiverse.”

Tim Burton's new series Wednesday, a supernatural dark comedy starring Jenna Ortega, will be released on Netflix on November 23, 2022.
