It looks like Netflix is giving up on their animation business. After a highly publicized subscriber loss, Netflix is slamming the brakes on their animation business, firing multiple executives and canceling several highly anticipated animated shows. According to foreign media The Wrap, Phil Rynda, the creative leader and development director of Netflix's original animation department, and several of his other subordinates were fired. In addition, several highly anticipated animations were also canceled. This includes: The long-awaited animated adaptation of "Bone" is based on Jeff Smith's famous comics Roald Dahl's The Twits, although the project is said to be a film "Toil and Trouble" by Lauren Faust When it comes to cancellations or threatened cancellations, several creators, including City of the Dead director Elizabeth Ito, have complained about Netflix using "phased data" to make their point — using manipulated data to justify a lack of funding or cancellations despite projects being well received. Equally upsetting for creators is Netflix's marketing deal. Promotion often doesn't start until a month before release, and sometimes the project isn't even announced until then. This leaves a very small window for promotion of the project, which is especially difficult for smaller animation projects that rely on creators to promote through social media. |
