Sony and Amazon's reboot of "God of War" has all its original writers quit

Sony and Amazon have reportedly rebooted the God of War live-action series, with the script cancelled and a new writing team to be hired. The previous producers and writing team have all withdrawn from the project.

According to Deadline, showrunners Rafe Judkins (Chrono Trigger), EP Hawk Ostby, and Mark Fergus (Children of Men, Iron Man, The Expanse) have left the live-action project after completing multiple scripts for the first season.

Deadline reports: "While a source told Deadline that the trio's script received favorable reviews from both Sony and Prime, the two studios are apparently pursuing different creative directions."

The Amazon Prime version of "God of War" series was officially announced in 2022. It was originally scheduled to follow the story of the 2018 "God of War" reboot. The series, centered on the father and son protagonists Kratos and Atreus, is one of the most popular works of PlayStation, with sales of approximately 23 million.

At the time, Amazon Studios' head of television Vernon Sanders told Collider that fans shouldn't expect the show to stray too far from the books.

"At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons and family, set against this huge epic landscape," Saunders said. "So I think what Rafe and Mark and Hawk have come up with for season one and for the show as a whole is both very true to the books and very compelling. If you've never played the games, you're going to love the show and feel very drawn to it. So we think it's going to be a huge show."
